Ocean tech is an industry where women are underrepresented. To inspire more women to enter the industry, we’re profiling Sara Hynes, Quality Assurance Technician at SubC Imaging, and how she got her start.

Working with Technology
Working in a male-dominant field has its challenges, but that didn't stop Sara Hynes, SubC’s Quality Assurance Technician, from pursuing a career in ocean tech.
"I've always been interested in taking things apart to see how they work and fixing things the best I could when broken."
During high school, Sara went on a field trip to the Marine Institute to explore the programs they offered. While there, she was fascinated by the ROV simulator and her interest was piqued. Although she didn't originally pursue a career in ocean tech, Sara's time with the ROV simulator stayed with her.
Two years after starting her degree in Psychology, Sara came to the realization that she wanted to work with technology. Sara was accepted into the Marine Institute and completed their 4-year Underwater Vehicles program -- and she loved it!
Getting Her Start at SubC
Sara has been with SubC for just over a year now and said her favorite part of her job is seeing our cameras used in real-world applications. "I have always been interested in ocean exploration and seeing how we help in that cause is amazing,’ says Sara. When talking about the OceanGate Expedition, a SubC partner who is using our cameras to document the deterioration of the Titanic, she says, ‘the Titanic trip last summer was extra special to me as I had a part in those cameras, making sure they were in tip-top condition before being sent out!"
"Everyone should pursue their interests, no matter their gender. I'm typically the only woman on snowmobiling or dirt biking trips with my friends, or when we go fishing, but it's never even occurred to me to not do something I was interested in just because I'm a woman."
