First Remote Subsea Inspection in US Gulf Uses SubC Imaging Tech

SubC Imaging technology was recently used in the first remote subsea inspection carried out in the US Gulf of Mexico. It’s a milestone also believed to be among the first American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) approved remote inspections in US waters.

Working with contractor Wood, Woodside used SubC Imaging’s real-time streaming solution to deliver high-quality subsea video live from the Shenzi asset, 195 km offshore Louisiana, to an onshore operations centre hundreds of kilometres away.

Traditionally, subsea inspection data is recorded offshore and reviewed weeks or months later. SubC Imaging’s real-time streaming technology changes that process entirely. By securely transmitting live, high-resolution video from offshore to onshore teams, operators can make immediate decisions, request follow-up inspection passes in the moment, and shorten the time from inspection to remediation. This reduces costly delays and improves data quality by ensuring anomalies are addressed while the inspection is still in progress. Learn more.

This live-streaming capability removed the need for a full complement of inspectors, engineers, and support personnel onboard the inspection vessel, significantly reducing offshore exposure and improving safety. It also allowed the team to review footage instantly, identify anomalies on the spot, and re-inspect in real time, reducing the reporting timeline from months to days.

"Wood led the subsea inspection from shore with SubC Imaging’s streaming capabilities," said Clinton Jensen, Subsea Inspection Lead at Wood. "It reflects our vision to lead the industry toward smarter, safer, and more efficient operations."

“Companies are realizing that remote inspections aren’t just about convenience. They fundamentally change how quickly and effectively you can respond to findings,” said Adam Rowe, VP Software at SubC Imaging. “By giving teams access to live subsea data from anywhere in the world, we’re helping them work safer, cut costs, and accelerate their entire inspection process.”

From safety improvements to efficiency gains, this project underscores how SubC Imaging’s remote operations technology is transforming offshore inspections for operators and service providers worldwide.
